Sandia conducts a variety of work activities that involve the use of ionizing radiation and radioactive materials. Although the likelihood of exposure to radiation or contact with radioactive material is extremely low for the average person at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), it is important that you be aware that radiological hazards exist in many locations, and know how to recognize them.
Members of the Workforce (Sandia employees and contract personnel, MOWs) and Department of Energy (DOE) personnel are required to complete radiological training commensurate with the area(s) they enter, as well as with the type(s) of radiological hazard(s) they may encounter while performing assigned activities. That said, MOWs and DOE personnel who require unescorted access to Controlled Areas, Radiological Buffer Areas, or Radioactive Material Areas must complete RAD102, General Employee Radiological Training, as a minimum.
Beyond the above, MOWs who are classified as radiological workers must complete RAD102, General Employee Radiological Training (as a minimum) if they do any of the following:
RAD102 retraining must be completed every 24 months.
Personnel who are current in Radiological Worker Training (i.e., RAD210, RAD230), Radiation-Generating Device Safety Training (RAD214), or Radiological Control Technician Training satisfy the requirements for RAD102.
Members of the Workforce and DOE personnel who are not classified as radiological workers (i.e., non-radiological workers), as well as visitors and tours, whether or not they have successfully completed RAD102, are NOT qualified or authorized to perform radiological work, such as:
